The article I chose to read was Donald Trump's despotic fantasies: Here's what the world would look like if he were president. The mode of this article was, in a way, argumentative. I say that this is argumentative because the author is basically trying to explain that Donald Trump is a bad choice for a future president. In the article the author tells us about actual things that Donald Trump has said in either the debates or just his speeches. The author's purpose in this article is to inform us on what Donald Trump says will happen if he becomes president of the United States. The intended audience of this article is current or future voters who are trying to decide who they want to vote for in the coming up election. I believe this because the author is trying to persuade us to not vote for Donald Trump. I am part of this audience because I will be old enough to vote for this election. The authors main insights for this article include:
Donald Trump quote from speeches and debates Deportation "The Wall" Muslims Terrorists Journalist's deaths And Islamophobia The author's word choice in this article helps make it very clear about her stance and thoughts about Donald Trump. The word choice specifically in this sections shows her thoughts: "At the time, we were mostly concerned with his signature plan to deport over 11 million people and build his “big beautiful wall” with a “big beautiful door” and have Mexico pay for it. His rhetoric was crude and demeaning, as he theatrically accused undocumented workers of being violent criminals constantly referring to the murder of “beautiful Kate” and the rape and sodomy of an elderly white women to illustrate the threat."

Week 11In the article Something Extraordinary Is Happening in the World, And Most People Haven't Noticed by Gustavo Tanaka, he lists eight things that are happening in society that we are just not realizing. However I have been studying these things in my sociology class so I was very aware of them all, other people may not so as aware as sociology students. The eight things he talked about were "No one can stand the employment model anymore", "The entrepreneur model is also changing", "The rise of collaboration", "We are finally figuring out what the Internet is", "The fall of exaggerated consumerism", "Healthy and organic eating", "The awakening of spirituality" and "Un-schooling trends".
This article is basically a blog post about things happening, whether they be good or bad, in the world. In a way the mode is also a cause and effect type of blog. I say that because Gustavo Tanaka is saying, well this is happening because of that. The author's purpose is to tell his audience that we need a social change with all these areas. I know this because in the section where he talks about healthy and organic eating he was talking about how we are so desperate for our food to taste good that we are willing to eat it even when it is basically being poisoned. He was saying that if we avoiding consuming and buying these products then the corporations would have to adapt to our new interests in food in order to avoid having the close down and to make more money. The intended audience is the general public. I know this because language is easy to read and understand while it also informs us about topics that we should be interested and informed about. I am part of the intended audience because I am part of the general public. The main insights for this essay are the topics I listed above such as, "No one can stand the employment model anymore", "The entrepreneur model is also changing", "The rise of collaboration", "We are finally figuring out what the Internet is", "The fall of exaggerated consumerism", "Healthy and organic eating", "The awakening of spirituality" and "Un-schooling trends". I know this because he elaborates these topics in great detail. The tone of this essay is a bit humorous at times yet it is also meant to inform you about topics. Rhetorical Reading BlogIn the article About Bathrooms by A.P. Herbert, Herbert really explained his love for baths, bathtubs, and bathrooms. The mode for this essay was to inform readers in a humorous way about how he likes his bathrooms to be. I also learned that "In Britain, a bathroom is simply a room with a bath. In Herbert's time, a sink and toilet were almost always in a separate room." I never knew that bathrooms strictly consisted of only a bathtub back then in Britain.
The purpose for this essay was to make his readers laugh while informing them of his dream bathroom. I know this because the entire essay is very sarcastic but at the same time he's informing his readers. His intended audience is probably adults from Britain. I think this because he uses complex language as well as terms that I have never heard in the United States such as: "It works like the indicators outside lifts, which show where the lift is and what it is doing." and " I have often wondered where he hid the ends, and I find now that he has made a cache of them in the gas-ring of the geyser." The tone is funny so the adults reading this would need to be prepared for his sarcasm. i'm not part of this audience because I'm not an adult yet, and I'm also not from Britain. His insights include: "The whole attitude of modern civilization to the bathroom is wrong. " "there ought to be rich rugs in it and profound chairs" (decoration) "a bathroom ought to be equipped for comfort" Bringing the bath itself up to date if you cannot furnish the bathroom as he explains is correct. Taps in the bath Putting an electric bell in the bathroom above the bath Trays for books, razors, sponges and soaps A smoking tray His inventions. Week 9In the article Advice to Youth by Mark Twain, he gives wise words of advice to the young people of today.
The mode of Advice to Youth is kind of a cause and effect type of essay. It is cause and effect because Mark Twain gives advice such as, "Always obey your parents, when they are present. This is the best policy in the long run, because if you don’t, they will make you." So Mark is telling the youth that if they do not obey their parents than there will be consequences. The consequence (while it may very) is that your parents will make you listen to them. Mark Twain also says, "Be respectful to your superiors, if you have any, also to strangers, and sometimes to others. If a person offend you, and you are in doubt as to whether it was intentional or not, do not resort to extreme measures; simply watch your chance and hit him with a brick. That will be sufficient. If you shall find that he had not intended any offense, come out frankly and confess yourself in the wrong when you struck him; acknowledge it like a man and say you didn’t mean to." He is saying to be respectful for those who respect you. If someone offends you, hurt them. If you find out that they did not mean to offend you, admit you are wrong and apologize. Mark Twain also says, "Yes, always avoid violence; in this age of charity and kindliness, the time has gone by for such things. Leave dynamite to the low and unrefined." Do not be violent because violence is bad. The purpose of this essay is for Twain to give his opinions to the youth based on his experience. I know this because the name of this essay is Advice to Youth. The intended audience of this essay is the youth. Young people from ages who would be able to understand and comprehend what Twain is saying to do. I think I am part of the audience because I can read and understand this essay and I know what he would want me to do. Twain's insights include telling the youth to obey their parents, respect their superiors, admit when they are wrong, avoid violence and be careful with using guns. His style support the essay because his insights tell the audience what he wants them to do. Week #8 ReadingThe essay I chose to read was 1100 by Christopher Morley.
In the first paragraph of his essay her talks about how the managing editor, the city editor, the production manager, the foreman of the composing room, and the leading editorial writer were all on his back about submitting his essay to them by the time it was due. The essay was required to be 1100 words, hence, the name of his essay. In the next paragraph he began to say how the sternness of these men, especially the production manager, had distressed his spirit. When he wrote this, it reminded me of a huge deadline that someone may have, in which they are struggling to meet. The person that has set the deadline is rushing them and telling them that they have to write faster or complete their work in a quicker pace. In the same paragraph he said "They are all, in off hours, men of delightfully easy disposition. They are men with whom it would be a pleasure and a privilege to be cast away on a desert island or in a crowded subway train. It is only just to say that they are men whom we admire greatly." Once this was said it made me think of a love/hate relationship where someone is questioning why exactly they can get along with these people outside of work or school, but they cannot seem to be civil while doing work together. Further on in the essay he says "...in the conduct of their passionate and perilous business, that is, of getting the paper out on time, a holy anguish shines upon their brows. The stern daughter of the voice of God has whispered to them, and they pass on the whisper to us through a megaphone." These people that he works with are extremely passionate about their work it seems, and they hold high standards to him and themselves to release the paper by the due date. He continued to tell what I believe is story where he was rushing to the station in a down-pouring rain, getting drenched in the process. However, he uses very complex sentences to describe the rain and to explain just how drenched he had gotten, he goes in further to explain it in a simpler way, with more commonly used language. He says "...we scorn, even when writing against time, to take petty advantages." Meaning he explains this event twice to use the word count to his advantage. "Eleven hundred words--what a lot could be said in 1100 words!" I thought this quote was important because it is true, 1100 word is a lot. You can tell a great story with 1100 words, write a research paper, or even a narrative essay. 1100 words is a lot to work with, and it has endless opportunities. Although, one thousand one hundred is often times difficult for people to reach. With that big of a word count the paper or essay could start to sound repetitive or be completely full of nonsense or completely off topic half of the time. Several times in this essay Morley will say something along the same lines as "The conduct of raindrops on a smoking-car window is capricious and odd, but we must pass on. That topic alone would serve for several hundred words, but we will not be opportunist." These two sentences are offering another topic for an essay for him to write possibly in the future, but the second sentence is saying that he will not include that story in this essay because he does want it to be too obvious that he is trying to get the word count up to one thousand one hundred. The best part of this essay is by the time you get to the very last word, you will have read exactly one thousand one hundred words. Choice Blog #7As much as people deny that it still exists, sexism and racism are still very much alive. The fact that women still get paid less than men stands to reason that sexism is still thriving in the current society in which we live in. Many will say that this is in fact not true and that it is "made up" by feminist radicals. They are wrong. There have been studies by creditable sources that have proven the accuracy of the statement that there is in fact sexism in the way in which we pay the workers.
In fact, my mom has worked at the same place for twenty five years, and a male worker that has worked with her for much less than twenty five years makes more money than she does. Another example is an older man at a driving range I was at had felt the need to extensively explain the risk of having an accident while driving just after he realized that only girls were present. So he was hinting at the stereotype of girls being terrible drivers. There are even people in the world who think that women are superior to men or vice versa. A friend of mine had told me about an incident at lunch in which there was a person who was openly expressing their views about multiple topics. The topics included that "men superior to women", "the wage gap between men and women does not exist", and that "feminism is not important". The person that was saying all these things was in fact a female. My guess is that this girl does not know was feminism really is. Rape culture is also in a way connected to sexism. This is because men and women both treat each other like sexual objects. I read an article in one of my other classes that claimed only men treated women like sexual objects, but in today's society is that really the case? The fact that racism still exists as well shocks me. We are in the year 2015 people, actually it is almost 2016 and you still have not realized that races are equal to each other? That's sad. I observed some racism on my bus just the other day. There was a person who had refused to listen to a song that their friend was trying to get them to listen to, just because "the singer is black." I do not necessarily agree with this topic that cops are racist, but some cops clearly are. There have been several hate crimes involved with a law enforcement officer of another race such as blacks to whites or whites to blacks. I hate thinking about how the people who are meant to keep us safe, are attacking us out of cold blood due to being a different color than you are. That is all we are, a different color. Are you going to hate a pencil that you have just because it is a different color other than the color that is your favorite? Will you refuse to use it because of its color? Will you break the pencil in half and throw it across the room just because it is red or green instead of blue or purple? You sound crazy if you answered yes. This topic is not technically connected to racism, but I feel that it needs to be said. People call black people African-American quite often out of "respect". I do not consider this phrase respectful at all. A lot of blacks are not directly from Africa. They grew up here in america, along with their parents, their grandparents, and maybe even great grandparents. So calling blacks African-American is basically like calling ourselves European-American. Sounds ridiculous does it not? |
